In our classes we have been spending lots of time finding out all sorts of facts about animals from both New Zealand and around the world. It has been interesting looking at the different habitats and diets of the animals.
We are also looking at the classification of animals, and how scientists identify and group animals. This website:
http://www.landcareresearch.co.nz/resources/identification/animals/bug-id/what-is-this-bug
provides a great way of identifying insects in your garden. It could be an interesting exercise to find a bug, then follow the pathway to identify exactly what it is.

We have been having a wonderful time finding out all sorts of facts about animals. Thank you for all the work you are doing at home to add to our knowledge about the animal world.
On the weekend of the 27th/28th March BioBlitz 2015 is taking place at Kepa Road in Orakei. You can find more information about it here:

It would be an interesting thing to do. Lots of classes have been conducting surveys to find out how many animals are in our school grounds. Doing the surveys has involved lots of quiet observation. It has been surprising just how many animals classes have found.
You could investigate how many different animal species live in your back garden, or how many you can find in a local park. You'll need to think about how you will collect the information, how you will keep a record of what you find, and perhaps what interesting ways you can find to share what you find with your class.
Have fun!

In CIB learning this round, we would like the children to talk to you about what happened at the Zoo.
We will be looking at a case study with the vet and thinking about how the zoo enriches the animals' lives with both the environment and the enrichment activities the animals are provided with. Asking questions about these two areas, as well as what the animals were doing, and any interesting facts the children learnt would be fantastic.
If your child would like to find out more about any of the animals they saw, the National Geographic Kids site is an easily accessible, interactive site for the children to use as is the WWF Panda site, If they were interested in thinking more about the zoo visit by making something, they could make a diorama, or model of an animal's enclosure and either take a photo to share with us, or bring the model in to show the class.
